Background of the Study

Digital identity systems have become integral to the management of student and faculty records in universities. Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, requires a reliable method to manage and verify the identities of its students, faculty, and staff members, especially as more administrative processes and academic activities are digitized. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and tamper-resistant nature, offers a promising solution for secure digital identity management (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024).

Traditional identity systems face challenges such as identity theft, unauthorized access, and manipulation of records. Blockchain’s ability to provide transparent, immutable, and secure storage of personal information has made it an attractive option for universities looking to upgrade their digital identity systems (Ogunwale et al., 2023). By implementing a blockchain-based digital identity system, Federal University, Gashua, can enhance security, ensure the integrity of academic and administrative records, and enable seamless and trusted interactions between the university and external systems.

This study explores the development of a blockchain-based digital identity system for Federal University, Gashua, with a focus on ensuring secure, efficient, and decentralized management of users' identities.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Gashua, faces issues with its current identity management system, which is susceptible to data breaches, unauthorized access, and the risk of record tampering. Students, faculty, and staff members’ identities are vulnerable to theft or misuse, posing a risk to the integrity of academic records and university processes.

This study seeks to develop a blockchain-based digital identity system that enhances the security and reliability of identity management at the university.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the limitations of the current digital identity management system at Federal University, Gashua.

  2. To develop a blockchain-based digital identity system for students, faculty, and staff.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the blockchain-based system in terms of security, usability, and performance.

Research Questions

  1. What are the limitations of the current identity management system at Federal University, Gashua?

  2. How can blockchain technology be leveraged to improve digital identity management at the university?

  3. What are the advantages of using a blockchain-based digital identity system over traditional identity management systems?

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to enhancing the security and efficiency of identity management at Federal University, Gashua, by providing a blockchain-based solution that addresses current system vulnerabilities. The system will improve the trustworthiness of university records and simplify administrative processes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses exclusively on the design and development of a blockchain-based digital identity system for Federal University, Gashua. It does not extend to the implementation of blockchain for other purposes within the university.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Identity: A representation of an individual's personal information in a digital format, used for authentication and access control.

  • Tamper-Resistant: The ability to prevent unauthorized modifications to data, ensuring its integrity.
